Mozambique: Maputo Cathedral
The Maputo Cathedral aka Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição is one of the most iconic landmarks in downtown Maputo. It sits prominently on Independence Square, right next to Maputo City Hall. The cathedral was constructed during the Portuguese colonial times in 1936-44, it’s an eclectic mix of modernist, Neo-gothic, an Art Deco – spring spire, clean white walls, little decorations. Interior is spacious and also austere with a few stained glass windows and paintings. Interestingly, the cathedral was designed completely pro bono by a Portuguese railroad engineer who was in charge of Mozambique railroads at the time.
