Mozambique: Maputo – Maputo Central Railway Station

Maputo Central Railway Station is viewed as one of the most beautiful train stations in the world and a standout landmark in Mozambique’s capital. Construction began in 1908 and the station was inaugurated in 1910. It served as a key hub during the colonial period, connecting Mozambique’s port to inland routes and neighboring countries (South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe). Today, it remains operational handling some passenger services to nearby towns. The station is an example of Beaux-Arts style with ornate detailing, columns, balustrades, and so on. The facade is 51m wide with a prominent Victorian-style clock and a central copper-clad dome. The platforms retain a historic feel with covered areas and vintage details. There is a railroad museum describing the history of the station and the railroad in Mozambique – with plenty of old trains and exhibits. Interestingly, a scene from “Blood Diamond” movie was shot here, to pass off for a building in Sierra Leone.
