Mozambique: Maputo – Mercado Central

Mercado Central de Maputo is a historic covered market in downtown Maputo, built in 1901 during the Portuguese colonial era. It’s a pretty colonial-style building with a large arched entrance gate. Inside – you get a glimpse at the authentic and bustling marketplace, offering a sensory explosion of colors, smells, and sounds. There are piles of tropical fruits (mangoes, pineapples, bananas, passion fruit, limes), vegetables, nuts (especially cashews), and spices, some souvenirs as well. Oh, and it’s also a great place to try local food – there are multiple stalls just outside the market’s walls.
