Myanmar: Sagaing Hill
20km south of Mandalay you can cross the Ayeyrwaddy River to the east side and get to the Sagaing Hill, jam-packed with ancient Buddhist pagodas, temples, monasteries, and the like. Sagaing was the capital of the 14th century Sagaing Kingdom, one of the earliest precursors of today’s Myanmar. The monasteries are all located along the mountain ridge and are all interconnected wry roofed passageways with spectacular panoramic views west toward the river. The central pagoda monastery is Soon U Ponya Shin with awesome gallery full of sitting Buddhas.
