Netherlands: Nijmegen
Nijmegen is the oldest settlement in Netherlands dating back to 5 AD and one of the only two former Roman colonies in the present day Holland. It is picturesquely located on the left bank of the Waal River, just 7km from the German border. Like many other historic towns in Netherlands, everything is centered around central square of Grotte Markt, with a spectacular Sint-Stevenskerk Church on it, amazingly ornate Weighhouse, and many other historic buildings. Many central streets are pedestrian and lined up with shops – Nijmegen is known as a shopping Mecca of Holland.
