New Zealand: Auckland – Exploring the City
As the capital of New Zealand, Auckland is not just a major city but home to 1/3 of the entire country’s population. Straddling the narrow peninsula on the North Island, it’s actually built on an active volcanic field (the only city in the world like that) – all the hills and islands surrounding the city are actually either extinct or dormant volcanic cones. The central business district is fairly compact with several skyscrapers and the Sky Tower as well as classical buildings, while just a short walk down toward the water take you to the Waitemata Harbor and Queens Wharf (try a burger at the White Lady stand here – it’s supposedly the thing to do in Auckland), and a little further – Viaduct Harbor.
