New Zealand: Fiordland NP – Kea Parrots
Kea (Nestor notabilis) is the world’s only alpine parrot living in the frigid environment of the Southern Alps – the endless snow-covered mountains, glacial valleys, and alpine lakes. They are fairly large birds at 50 cm / 20 inches long, mostly dark green in color, except of absolutely stunning bright-orange underwing – if you see them in flight from down below, they appear green-orange. The birds are very inquisitive and will immediately approach you when you stop along an alpine road, they will pose for your camera, and also try to chew on anything rubber-like in you car.
