Canada/Newfoundland: Gros Morne NP – climbing Gros Morne peak
Gros Morne National Park is the true jewel of Newfoundland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a series of flattop mountains preserving the arctic tundra environment on top. The hike to the top of Gross Morne at 806m elevation (2648 ft) is an incredible climb to an otherworldly world of permafrost with sweeping views in all directions, moldy ancient rocks contrasting with super green ferns all around you. Most often, the mountain is covered with fog and clouds, but occasionally luck in on your side and the sun shines through. An amazing 16km loop hike takes you through various environments – from peay bogs to boreal forest to treeless permafrost tundra. And a moose in the distance!
