Nicaragua: Masaya Volcano at Daytime
Masaya is one o the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua and the entire Central America. Masaya’s eruption in 4550 BC was one of the largest on Earth in the last 10,000 years! Spanish conquistadores theorized Masaya was the gate to hell, while the indigenous people made human sacrifices to the volcano. And you can literally drive up to the rim and look down into the crater that contains a vent filled with boiling lava (not visible during the daytime), spewing huge amounts of very toxic sulphur dioxide smoke. The smoke intensity changes rapidly with massive billows being spewed from time to time. In any other country, the access here would be pretty limited and controlled as a health hazard, but here in Nicaragua it’s pretty relaxed.
