Nicaragua: Masaya Volcano at Night
If you come to see the Nasaya Volcano crater at dusk and into the night, you will be treated to something totally extraordinary and surreal – a view of bubbling lava lake deep at the bottom of the fuming crater. There are only about 3-4 volcanoes in the world with lava lakes – Erta Ale in Ethiopia (the lake has recently disappeared), Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kilauea in Hawaii (which comes and goes). The Masaya lava lake is alive and kicking, although the lava is far down below and obscured by toxic smoke. But as the sun goes one, the glow becomes brighter, and when the smoke temporarily clear, you can actually see the lava! An absolutely incredible experience! By the way, scientists believe Masaya could violently erupt without any warning as magma is only about 2km beneath the crater. So enjoy while you can!
