Nigeria: Ogbunike Cave
Ogbunike Cave is a complex of caves and passageways near Onitsha in Anambra state. Exploring it is yet another moderately adrenaline nutcase experience – crawling through narrow tunnels, barefoot in bat guano, and having thousands of small bats swirling all around you! The cave is sacred for Igbo people (that’s why you are forced to remove shoes) and has been used for centuries for spiritual practices and as a place of refuge. There are two large entrances that then quickly shrink to ultra narrow passages that you have to bend and then crawl through (claustrophobs beware!). Eventually you enter larger halls inside that are jam-packed with bats!
