Norfolk Island: Fishing Adventure
Fishing on Norfolk Island was an adventure since the seas are rough and the island doesn’t have a safe harbor – even getting the boat into the water required lowering it down off the pier into the pounding waves. A couple hours of trawling in deep water (not for the seasick) yielded yellowfin tuna and bonito after spectacular fights. And then the real insanity began when bottom fishing at the offshore reef – trumpeter and grouper were reeled in one after another after another. Incredible! I even got two together at the same time! Every other catch were copper sharks that would often snap the bait or even the fish on the hook. I ended up with massive amounts of fresh fish filets that went into sashimi (red fish) and grilled or battered (white fish). Self-reliance in action…
