Norfolk Island: Views of Norfolk Island from Sea
Norfolk Island lies 1412 km east of Australia and closer to New Zealand, but together with nearby uninhabited Nepean and Philips islands is considered an Australian territory. The island is only 34.6 sq km (13.4 sq mi) and has steep vertical cliff faces except in only few places (one of them being the Kingston harbor). It’s a volcanic island that formed in eruption roughly 2-3 million years ago. The highest point is Mount Bates at 319 m (1,047 ft). It is notoriously difficult to land on and landing are usually successful in only a third of attempts – the swell is usually too strong given the islands total exposure to the open and deep seas without any coral reefs.
