North Korea: Mirae Scientists Street

Mirae Scientists Street is the newest street in Pyongyang and opened less then a year ago in November 2015. It was build to offer housing to scientists and employees of various research and technology institutions from the North Korean universities and the like. It’s a futuristic street of colorful hi-rise skyscrapers that seem like taken from the Futurama cartoon. It definitely is not what you expect from North Korea. The street stays lit all night (one of the few streets in Korea as otherwise electricity is in deficit thanks to sanctions). The main building on the street is built in a shape of an atom to symbolize – surprise surprise – the country’s success in splitting the atom. Supposedly the building is state of the art technology-wise and has multiple halls where scientists can collaborate on future atom-splitting projects.
