North Korea: Ostrich Farm
Taking it a step up on the bizarre scale – we paid a visit to an ostrich farm near Pyongyang. Apparently, dear leader Kim Jong Il was very fond of ostriches and gave a directive to build an ostrich farm. He visited many times, cuddling with ostriches and thinking how great they are for Korea. Once he was looking down a long stretch of a 2.1 km road along the farm and having precisely mentally calculated the distance, he decided that the most fitting name for this street would be – Ostrich Street. He also wanted to grow ostriches not for export but so that ordinary Koreans would have it. That is why his wisdom has been incapsulated in a beautiful mosaic at the farm (this narrative is basically verbatim from the guide at the farm).
