North Macedonia: Scopje – Old Bazaar
Across the river from the new monuments and kitsch lies the Okd Bazaar l, the historic core of Scopje. There was a marketplace as early as 12th century, and during the Ottoman times this was one of the largest bazaars in the Balkans. A lot of historic ottoman architecture here with a dozen of mosques and several caravanserai and hamams. The largest mosque – Isa Bey – stands at the edge of the bazaar. Next to it the massive Kale Fortress in a hill, dating back to the 11th century, and dominating the cityscape.
