Oman: Ancient City of Qalhat
The ancient city of Qahlat thrived and prospered between 11-14th centuries AD, when it was a major trade port linking Arabia with East Africa, India, China and South-East Asia, and visited by Marco Polo who described its fine bazaars and one of the most beautiful mosques. The extensive archaeological site has city walls and remnants of some buildings, but the main feature is the lonely but beautiful Bibi Maryam Mausoleum.
