Oman: Jebel Shams
Jebel Shams (Arabic for Mountain of the Sun) is the highest mountain in Oman at almost 10k feet (3k meters) – it is the first mountain to see the sunrise. While you can drive very close to the top over a very rough 4WD track, a better option is to drive to the edge of the plateau across the canyon from the peak. The views from here are known as the Grand Canyon of Oman – a massive jagged canyon very similar to the view from the North Rim in Arizona. Egyptian vulture are soaring in the thermals above the canyon and friend and inquisitive semi-feral goats come to say hello.
