Pakistan: China-Pakistan Friendship Tunnels

The Karakoram Highway stretch from Hunza to the Chinese border goes through newly-built China-Pakistan Friendship Tunnels, a series of engineering feats around the Attabad Lake. In January 2010, a massive landslide buried the original 40km of the road and created a massive body of water of the Attabad Lake by naturally damming the Hunza River (60 people died and 6000 were displaced). Between 2010 and 2015, the only way to travel was to take a ferry across the lake. Hence the construction of the tunnels at the cost of $275 million. There are a total of five tunnels with a combined length of 7369 m (24,180 feet). The longest tunnel is 3350 m.
