Palau: Badrulchau Stone Monoliths
The prehistoric basaltic monoliths in the north of Palau are often referred to as the “Easter Island of Micronesia”. It’s a rather small and not a very impressive site, but with a huge historical significance, pointing to ancient civilization on the island. There are a total of 52 basalt monoliths arranged in two long rows, some 2.5m tall and weigh several tons. Archaeologists estimate they were erected around 161 BC, making them nearly 2,000 years old. The basalt isn’t native to the immediate area, meaning these massive stones were transported over long distances. The place likely served as a sacred prayer ground.
