Palestine: Judean Desert

East of Jerusalem and all the way toward the Dead Sea lies the Judean Desert. It covers an area of roughly 3,000 sq km and is one of the most arid regions in the world, with extremely low precipitation levels and very high temperatures. The landscape is very rugged with sandy and rocky hills and deep wadi valleys. The region was once home to numerous monasteries and hermitages, and also the site of several battles and military campaigns throughout history, including the Roman siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD. The only people living here now are Beduin tribes.
