Papua New Guinea: Madang – Bilbil Village
Bilbil people used to live on a small offshore island off the Madang coast, but the island got overcrowded and Bilbil moved to the mainland. The traditional culture and houses were still preserved. The houses all use stilts which protect against floods and also provide shade during the day where villagers spend most of their daytime (we saw a tiny baby hanging in a sack on one of the stilts). The pandanus palm is used for construction of most houses The community mostly consists of fishermen and traditional clay pot makers, for which Bilbil people are famous. And yes, everybody chews betel nuts!
