Papua New Guinea: Mt Hagen – End of the World Orchid
I read about this super unique orchid species being native to only the Highlands of Papua New Guinea – known as End of The World orchid (aka Tiger Orchid). I definitely thought the chances of seeing one in the wild were slim. But, never say never – I got to see it twice (and second one even had fruits). Dendrobium Finisterrae as it is known in Latin (which does mean End of the World = Finis Terrae), these are some of the most bizarre flowers in the world. Orchids are known to camouflage themselves and look like insects to lure unsuspecting bees and beetles into trying to mate with a flower and thus pollinate them. These orchids looks like giant half spiders half bees half your worst insect nightmare with some tiger DNA mixed in.
