Papua New Guinea: Port Moresby NP – Greater Flying Foxes
The Port Moresby Nature Park is a vast area of forest and naturally the local flying foxes establish a huge – thousands strong – colony of the forest trees. These are the Greater Flying Foxes (at least I think so), some of the largest species in the flying fox family with 1.5 meter wingspans. The cacophony of sounds and noise were almost overwhelming and the bay were quite active and flying around in the middle of the day. They are herbivores and important in pollinating many flower species, especially nocturnal blooming. Flying foxes are quite actively hunted and eaten all over PNG, but they are safe here within the limits of the Port Moresby Nature Park.
