Papua New Guinea: Sepik River – Around Kopar Village
Lost in time village of Kopar along the Sepik River is absolutely fascinating – people live in traditional ways that have hardly changed over the last 100 years. Fishing and clamming is the main food source, while the nipa and sago palms provide for housing materials and also sago palm powder. We saw how the latter is being produced by pounding the core of the palm trunks and then straining the result mushy chips off the flour. The stilt houses are highly decorated with traditional drawings. No electricity, no internet, no AC, no windows, none of the things we are so used to these days. Lots of happy welcoming people, eager to both describe their ways of life and ask questions about life in faraway lands.
