Paraguay: Asuncion – Historic Center
Asuncion is a massive sprawling city of 2mln, but the historic center is rather compact and its grid is easily explorable on foot. Asuncion is one of the oldest cities in South America, founded in the middle of the 16th century, and there is a fair amount of the remnants of the colonial architecture to attest to this. But overall, everything in the Centro seemed crumbling, old, and falling apart. Paraguay flags flying everywhere and military guarding any approach to the presidential palace. All major architectural attractions are clustered in the old town – Pantheon of Heroes, Metropolitan Cathedral, Palacio de Los Lopes, and Casa Independencia. The Paraguay River celebrates the country from Argentina me you can easily glance across to the other side.
