Peru: Aguas Calientes
Aguas Calientes is known as a gateway to Machu Picchu – this is where the trains comes from Cusco and the buses go up the Machu Picchu winding road. For most tourists, it’s just an overnight stop before and/or after. If it wasn’t for Machu Picchu, this would have been a very scenic town, but the bigger attraction has turned it into a conveyor belt of tourists, crappy restaurants, touts, endless souvenir market, and just hordes and hordes of people. It’s quite a shame, and a warning sign that Machu Picchu crowds need to be restricted in the near future.
