Peru: Lima – Basilica of Santo Domingo
And one more church in the historic old Lima (promise – last one) – Basilica of Santo Domingo. This was the most interesting of the many religious buildings, mostly for the fact that one could climb 143 wooden stairs into the 46m/150ft tall pink bell tower for absolutely incredible panoramic views of the city and the distant mountains. And everything else was impressive and scrumptious – richly decorated nave and cupola, medieval library, loads of creepy wooden sculptures, absolutely stunning mosaic walls, and last but no least the crypt and catacombs full of skulls and bones. What’s not to like!
