Peru: Salinas y Aguadas Blancas National Reserve
This vast reserve covers high altitude plateau of lakes, salt lakes, grasslands, and mountains. It looks inhospitable and cold and yet it’s one of the best places in Peru to see the elusive vicuña camelids – wild relatives of alpacas and llamas with the finest and most expensive fur in the world – they are slender and graceful and move around the terrain in small groups. All around the reserved there are also large herds of alpacas, feeling at home where other animals would freeze and die off altitude. Nothing is more photogenic then baby alpacas!
