Philippines/Cebu: Oslob – Whale Sharks

Cebu Island is famous for its swimming with whale shark. It’s a bit of a zoo and probably not very nature friendly, but you get to experience the massive whale shark really close. The whale sharks are fed in close proximity to the shore and the shallow depths of up to 7m, with the whale sharks typically swimming at a depth of between 2m and the surface. Whale sharks look big from the surface but are so much bigger from underwater and it’s an awesome experience of swimming alongside the world’s biggest fish. Oslob however has been criticized a lot for essentially abusing whale sharks and altering their natural feeding instincts which has negative impact for the species in the short and long term. Overall, the experience is unique and intimate but a bit less natural than say in Baja in Mexico or in Djibouti.
