Philippines/Luzon: Casgawa Ruins
Casgawa Ruins are remains of the old Spanish-built town from the 16th century. The church dates back to 1587 and was burned and destroyed by the Dutch pirates in 1636. The church was then rebuilt but was completely destroyed together with the entire town in 1814 when the looming nearby Mayon Volcano violently erupted. The eruption buried the town and the surrounding areas under tons of tephra and pyroclastic flows, with only the belfry of the old church remaining standing, with over 2000 residents killed.
