Philippines: Manila – Fort Santiago
At the north of the Intramuros is Fort Santiago with imposing walls and guns and towers. The fort is strategically positioned along the banks of the Pasig River, providing a vantage point for monitoring incoming ships and controlling access to the city. It has served various purposes over the centuries, from a Spanish military fortress to a prison during World War II. One notable historical figure associated with Fort Santiago is the national hero of the Philippines, Jose Rizal, who, before his execution in 1896, spent his last moments incarcerated in Fort Santiago.v
