Philippines: Cagoyan de Oro – St Augustine Cathedral
Cagoyan de Oro lies in the north of the Mindanao province and is the capital of the Misamis Oriental Province. It is a large urban center of close to a million people and there isn’t much to see in the city itself, perhaps except the St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral. The original church was built here in 1624 by the Order of the Agustinian Recollects who came here to spread Christianity. Over the years, the church was attacked and destroyed over and over by rebels from the southern Mindanao (Mindanao is a mostly Muslim island, and Philippines had a long history of revels movements in the island). The cathedral is quite ornate on the interior and gathers massive crowds on Sundays.
