Philippines/Mindanao: Davao City – Durian Monument
Davao is the heart of the durian production region in Philippines. There is even a monument dedicated to the stinky fruit! Durian is considered “king of fruits” in the Philippines, although it orgininarex from further south in Borneo. The fruit is infamous for its aroma, some consider it unique and intriguing and some think it’s repugnant and stinky. The reason for the smell is that the durian flowers are nocturnal and are pollinated solely by fruit bats. And hence Davao holds millions of fruit bats, it’s only natural to have such an abundance of durian.
