Portugal: Evora

Evora is yet another UNESCO World Heritage town in the heart of Portugal – it’s completely enclosed by medieval walls and is jam-packed with attractions inside – Roman ruins, Moorish architecture, stunning churches, and grand palaces. The Roman Temple of Evora is the best preserved Roman structure on the Iberian peninsula, built in the 1st century AD – 14 intact Corinthian columns topped with regional Estremoz marble capitals. Evora Cathedral from 1280 is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal, and there is also the 16th century Church of St. Francis. The heart of the city is the Praca do Giraldo central square, lined with elegant Renaissance arches, outdoor cafes and restaurants, and a monumental marble fountain dating back to 1570. The city is a delight to explore, especially when it’s all lit at night.
