Portugal: Lisbon – Elevador de Santa Justa
Seemingly out of place among the building of the old town, this futuristic looking tower is actually an elevator from the Baixa (lower town) to the Barrio Alta (upper town) and was designed and built in 1901 by the French architect Raoul Mésnier du Ponsard, an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel (hence the apparent design similarities with the Eiffel Tower). On top of the elevator, there is an observation platform offer superb views of downtown Lisbon.
