Primorski Krai: Vladivostok – Funicular & Eagle’s Nest
This is the only funicular in the Russian Far East, built in 1962 under direct order of Nikita Khrushchev, a year after he visited San Fransisco in the USA and decided that Vladivostok should be just like that (and I had exactly the same impression). The funicular runs 183 meters in just under 5 minutes connecting the embankment area at the sea level with the Eagle’s Nest observation platform at the highest point in central Vladivostok. The ride costs only 14 rubles (20 cents) but you have to bear with an angry old conductor lady who will tell you “no photos” (the funicular must be militarily and strategically important). At Eagle’s Nest, you will be treated to the best panorama of the city and the Golden Bay Bridge (this is also where weddings like to come and take pictures and when I was there, the bride wore only a thing underwear with a bra and heels with a transparent gown on top). Meanwhile in Russia!).
