Reunion: Ascending Piton de la Fournaise
Another volcano conquered! Piton de la Fournaise is a massive volcano dominating the south of the island of Reunion at. Early 9k feet high. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world! Climbing it is an absolute must do – it’s a 14km grueling hike in brutal wind and cold. First you descend 600 steps down many switchbacks to caldera floor. Then you hike across the caldera on lava flows (lucky if you don’t twist multiple ankles). Then you ascend 600 meters up to the caldera crater rim for a view of the crater. The crater is beyond awesome (next post). The weather changes on you in a minute and instead of sunshine you are now in the milky clouds and fog which makes for fun return trip.
