Rostov Oblast: Rostov-on-Don – Don River Waterfront
Rostov-on-Don lies on the Don River (as the name implies) – a large waterway in Russia flowing into the Sea of Azov and consequently offering access to the Black Sea. The city was established as a fortress by Elizabeth the Great in the mid-18th century to control trade with Turkey. The river dissects the city, separating the old town from the new districts (that houses the brand new stadium built for the World Cup in 2018). The waterfront is a pleasant embankment full of restaurants and piers, and an insane number of various monuments.
