Rwanda: Nyungwe NP – Chimpanzee Tracking

Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in the south of Rwanda, on the border with Burundi and Congo. It’s a massive montane rainforest, in fact the best preserved one in the entire Africa. It straddles the Congo/Nile rivers watershed divide. 13 species of primates live here (25% of Africa’s total) – most importantly a large population of chimpanzees – our closest relatives. Unfortunately, the weather was totall crap – relentless soaking rain all morning – so the chimps didn’t really come out much until the rain subsided. And even then everything was wet, foggy, and hard to photograph as well as climb steep muddy hills
