Saba: Climbing Mt Scenery
Mount Scenery is the peak of the Saba Island, in a way the entire island is this stratovolcano that rises from zero to nearly 3,000 feet. It is potentially active and if it blows – the island is doomed given the topography. The hike to the top is strenuous at the very least – over 1000 steps and then ankle deep mud with sheer dropoff just inches off the trail. The top is usually in clouds, but a rare opening gave a spectacular view of the vertically rising island below and the infamous airport runway in the distance. The cloud forest near the top is spectacular in its own right.
