Saba: World’s Shortest Runway
Saba is very small island that rises extremely steep from the ocean to nearly 3,000 feet. Everything is vertical here and cars drive only in 1st or 2nd gear. The only flat point is at aptly named Flat Point where the airport is located. The runway is the world’s shortest runway at 396m/1299ft and is bounded by steep mountain on one side and sheer dropoffs into the ocean on the other three. When you approach the island you think there is no freaking way you land here. And when you take off, the runway just ends before the plane lifts off of it. Thrill? No jets can land here – only Twin Otters.
