Saint Helena: Island Views from the Water
Approaching St Helena from the sea, you get a good perspective of how rugged and isolated this Atlantic Ocean island is. It took 4.5 days to sail here from Trista da Cunha and even then it’s still another km (1,210 mi) to the the coast of Africa from here! St Helena is a volcanic island formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, the island’s total land area is about 122 sq km (47 sq mi). The island is relatively small and round, measuring approximately 16km (mi) in length and 8km (5 mi ) in width, but it rises quite dramatically upwards with rugged volcanic features, cliffs, steep slopes, and valleys and deep ravines. The central part of the island is dominated by the central ridge, which reaches its highest point at Diana’s Peak at 818 m (2,684 ft) above sea level.
