Saint Martin: Marigot – Fort Louis
Perched on top of a steep hill and towering above the town of Marigot and the extensive harbor stands the spectacular Fort Louis from 1767. The fort served as a strategic stronghold to protect the island from invasions and attacks, by both pirates and the British and Dutch. The fort played a significant role in the island’s history, witnessing various conflicts and changes in ownership between the French and Dutch. Over the centuries, it underwent several renovations and expansions to strengthen its defenses. Its commanding position offers breathtaking panoramic views of Marigot, the surrounding coastline, and neighboring islands. The French tricolor is raised high above the fort and the medieval cannons pointing in all directions.
