Sao Tome: Roca Agua Ize
Here’s another former cocoa plantation (aka roca) and factory that thrived and supplied most of Europe under the Portuguese control but now is mostly abandoned and being slowly taken over by jungle. This used to be a large area with cocoa facilities and warehouses, living quarters for workers, large hospital, school…. and now it’s just mostly nothing, some squatters living in abandoned buildings, and kids running around. Forest overtook the plantation lands here and the only remaining agriculture is just around small plots where people grow basic subsistence level crops. No cocoa being produced since the independence in 1975.
