Saudi Arabia: Medina – Quba Mosque

While the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina is the most famous and the second oldest mosque in the world, it is the Quba Mosque, located in the outskirts of the city that holds the title of the oldest mosque on the planet. According to historic records, Mohammad laid the first foundation stones for the Quba Mosque when he arrived here from Mecca in 622 CE. This was also the mosque where the first Friday Prayer was held by Mohammad himself. In 1984 the mosque was completely rebuilt with almost everything of the old structure being torn down. It’s a beautiful whitewash building with four corner minarets (the original had only one) and a beautiful central courtyard.
