Sierra Leone: Freetown – around town
Freetown is the capital is Sierra Leone and the largest town of over 1 million people. It sits in the world’s third largest natural harbor. It. It was founded in 1792 by freed African American slaves, hence the name Freetown. Monrovia in Liberia was founded only 30 years later. Freetown is a sprawling city spread over coastal hills – there are pretty old historic areas as well as outright slums. Sierra Leone is 50/50 Christian and Muslim and the city is a mix of religions, all peacefully living together. The older buildings reflect British colonial architecture. History of Sierra Leone is a fascinating read – the country had over 20 coups since independence – pretty much everybody overthrowing everybody….
