Slovakia: Spisske Podhradie
Having explored the spectacular Spissky Grad castle ruins on a previous trip to Slovakia, it was time to check out the Spisske Podgradie (literally “Spisske under the castle”) town beneath it. The little town, founded in 1174, itself is a UNESCO World Heritage, with a pretty square and old house and a plague monument, typical of many other towns in Slovakia. Adjacent to it, is another town of Spisská Kapitula aka “church town” with the fortified wall-off Romanesque-Gothic 13th century St. Martin’s Cathedral. Both towns and the surrounding areas have perfect panoramic views of the Spissky Grad castle as well.
