Slovakia: Spissky Grad (Spiss Castle)
This was an amazing site – one of the largest medieval castle ruin sites by area set on top of steep hill with 360 views around and two historic old towns at the bottom. This massive castle was build in the early 12th century at a location with commanding views for miles and miles around. A freak thunderstorm just before I got here made it muddy and slippery to hike up the steep hill, resulting in multiple falls and mud-sliding. But in the end – it was all worth it for the views and the atmosphere of a fairytale medieval fortress high up in the sky. (Thorough exploration of the site didn’t reveal any hidden Sleeping Beauty). This is one of the first UNESCO sites in Slovakia and is truly magnificent. The last pic is not mine, but gives an aerial view.
