Solomon Islands: Frigate Island – Lesser Frigates

The Frigate Island is not called Frigate for nothing – it is home to thousands of nesting lesser frigate birds. Frigate birds are large seabirds soaring high on wind thermals and feeding mostly on fish jumping out of the water when bigger predators hunt them from underneath. Frigate birds are also kleptoparasitic – they will chase other seabirds with fish to make them drop their catch and then they grab it. There are five species of frigate birds in the world, all in the tropical regions (two species are confined to tiny islands).
